I empathize with the headache sufferer. I know the effect personally, of headache on one's lifestyle, the pain it can involve, and how it can just ‘take away your day’. I know that ‘otherwise healthy’ people can be afflicted by headaches. So, it is especially meaningful to me, to try and help people who are affected by regular headache. My story started a long time ago…
Montreal 1986, I was 10 years old and had another pounding migraine. The most encouraging words from a family friend were said to me “you will be a great help to others when you are older”. Those positive, re-assuring words, made me feel a bit better.
Fast forward to around 2015, working as a PT for a decade, I just knew that treating necks was my thing. It came easy to me, and I enjoyed it. I became known by local clinicians and patients for my skills (Thank you to the McKenzie Institute for my credentialing in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, in 2011). I grappled with the above approach, and eventually arrived at the point where I’d seen enough clinical scenarios of neck out there, combined with my training, that I could successfully diagnose, prognosticate, and treat most orthopedic cases successfully. It is the foundation of my practice. BUT… I believed that to sub-specialize and excel in headache treatment, I needed to learn more, that something was missing.
I still experienced headaches from time to time, and apart from the pain, it frustrated me that I was getting them! I wanted to understand them better, and was driven to find a solution for them. I searched Toronto, Canada, and then the world, to find Dr. Dean Watson. He is an Australian based PT who specializes in headache care. That’s when I travelled to Spain, to start my post-graduate studies in his approach.
With the training from the Dean Watson Headache Institute, I better understand, assess, and treat headache clients. SO MUCH better than before! Headache treatment by many clinicians is as Dean says, a ‘dog’s breakfast’. A generalized approach to working on things. And while headache (like many orthopedic issues), can be multi-factorial, there IS a needed specificity and focus if you’re going to make a real difference in someone’s situation. I now apply the Watson approach, to my clients with headache concerns, since 2016.
I’m in this profession to help people feel better, live more, engage more fully with their loved ones, and to ultimately improve their capacity to better chase their own dreams! My dream is to be THE go-to clinician for headache care. I’m on that path and am only getting better.
